Joe Russell, my Grandpa, has accomplished a myriad of things in his 95 years walking this planet. In addition to raising an incredible family, he served his country in World War II, flying bombing missions in Europe with the 485th Bomb Group. He doesn't much talk about his heroics so we were somewhat surprised when he agreed to be an honorary flag raiser before the Minnesota Twins game at Target Field on April 30th. My uncle Bill Dane helped arrange the event. The Twins even gave Grandpa a jersey with the number 95 on the back. The crowd roared when the public address announcer described his service and the camera operator had to pan fast to capture the flags moving up the pole as Grandpa cranked at a furious pace, all of it displayed live on the jumbotron. The Twins did an excellent job honoring a great man. No one is more deserving.
